US firm Wolverine Power Group Limited has said that it is planning
to invest US$2 billion in a 1,200 MW thermal power plant in the southern
city of Can Tho.
The announcement was made on Wednesday during a working session between the group and the city authorities.
"This is a major project aiming to supply
sufficient electricity to meet the future demands of the city and the
Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta," said president of the group Dennis J Werner.
He assured that the plant will use cutting-edge and environmentally friendly technology.
Meanwhile, Le Hung Dung, Chairman of the
municipal People's Committee said that Can Tho needs a power plant as it
aims to become a power centre for the whole Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta
region.
"The energy production in Can Tho and the Cuu
Long (Mekong) Delta has not kept pace with the demands for development,"
Dung said.
He raised the fact that a major new power plant is necessary for the delta region to spur its socio-economic development.
"Therefore, it is necessary to attract foreign investment in constructing thermal power plants," he added.
